Minnie Farmer Holmes (1927-1967)
Minnie Holmes was born to James Gadsden Holmes IV and Minnie Lee Farmer in Columbia, South Carolina. She made her debut at the 1946 Assembly ball in Columbia, South Carolina and graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina in 1948. While in college, she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Pan-Hellinic Council, and Euphrosynean Literary Society, and on the staff of the Garnet and Black. After she earned her degree, she was a member of the Spinsters clus and Les Demoiselles, and was treaurer of the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae chapter.
On November 26, 1949, she married William E. Murray at Trinity Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. She was mother to three children: Pamela Holmes (1949), Elizabeth (?), and Catherine Peronneau Murray Smith (married to Hilton C. Smith).
The gates of the South Cargovernor's mansion dedicated to her; plaque reads: "These gates are given by William E. Murray in
memory of his wife, Minnie Holmes Murray, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James
Gadsden Holmes. Date of gate erection : October, 1986."
